The 3 Ps of Reproduction: Pheromones, Photons, Phood. Graeme Martin Professor, The University of Western Australia As a PhD student, he began wondering how the reproductive system responds to changes in the environment. Over the subsequent 40 years, he studied a variety of ‘models’, including ratites, canids, marsupials and ruminants. He has learned how the brain receives inputs about night length (photons), the odours of its flock mates (pheromones), the availability of food, and body status (eg, energy balance). His personal scientific journey has been punctuated with unexpected discoveries that offered amazing new perspectives on reproductive biology. They have discovered a plethora of control processes within the gonad – most astonishing, for him, being the ‘non-coding RNAs’ produced by DNA that interfere with the control of cells by genes. The implications? First, they are optimistic about the possibility of repairing brain tissue. Second, gone is the simple view that a gene produces RNA that produces a protein to control the cell, with non-coding RNAs offering a new suite of therapeutic possibilities. Third, photons, pheromones and food have presented ‘clean, green and ethical’ management of livestock – a complete about-turn in the thinking that dominated research on livestock reproduction when he was a student. Until now, he has published 168 articles and a total of citations are 5012. Graeme Martin has taken over as Editor in Chief of Reproduction, Fertility and Development.
报告二:Helminth resistant Merino sheep: breeding progress, nutrition and immunity Shimin Liu Professor, The University of Western Australia Shiming Liu is a professor in the university of Western Australia. Professor Liu is always devoted to researching on animal nutrition, metabolism, physiology, meat quality, antioxidant activity, animal health , dairy products and methane emission in ruminants. He makes many achivements in the filed of animal science. From now on, he has published 87 articles and 7 conference papers. A total of citations in the papers is 666.
报告三:Breeding the ideal meat sheep for Australian conditions using the best possible genetics available Dawson Bradford Dr, Chairman of directors at WAMMCO International, Australia Dr Dawson Bradford owns and runs a family farm along with his wife Greta and son Dawson and his wife Lisa 160Kms S.E. of Perth in Western Australia. He was honoured by Murdoch University in 2010 when he was bestowed with an Honorary Degree of Science in recognition for services to the sheep and pig industries of WA and for assistance to the University in research and educating of students. He was also inducted into the Western Australian Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2015 in recognition of his services to the agricultural industry of WA and to his own community. Where science doesn’t have the answers Dr Dawson has his over 50 years of experience to draw upon and has achieved outstanding results and acceptance by the industry with his new breed of sheep.
